Rim tape was invented to shield the tube from mechanical harm that can be caused by the end of the spokes & oftentimes, the holes that are in the wheel itself. There are different tapes for different types of rims. Let’s say you have wide spoke OE GMC Acadia rims; if you buy rubber rim tapes, the inflated tube would just push the tape into the vacant holes, which means it wouldn’t be useful at all. The only thing that would work for all rims would be an adhesive, which is a fabric rim tape that is made with heat resistant glue to prevent from slipping.
Who would’ve thought people would be this careful about their OE wheels, huh?
