The Ford Aerostar began production in 1985 and was Ford's first minivan to be marketed to the public. The Aerostar was a three door mini van that was the first american vehicle in its class (mini van) that did not share its platform with any other vehicle, although a large portion of its components were borrowed from preexisting Ford vehicles. The first generation came standard equipped with a 2.3L, four cylinder engine but was available for upgrade with a 2.8L, 3.0L, and 4.0L V6 engines and was offered with either 5 speed manual or 4 speed automatic transmissions. The second generation, which ran from 1992 until 1997, was available with similar specifications with the notable differences that only V6 engines were available and a 5 speed automatic transmission was available alongside the previous transmissions. In 1997 the Aerostar was discontinued, without a replacement until the Transit Connect in 2010, although Fords Windstar which was available as a van is often times considered its replacement.
