In 1992 AM General created the Hummer name brand to market a version of their military Humvee (or the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle -HMMWV- as was its official, albeit not as popular, name) to the general public. Although the Hummer brand name was sold to GM in 1999, a mere seven years after the H1s debut, AM General continued to manufacture Hummers while General Motors was responsible for distributing and marketing the vehicles. Sales were fine until the automobile market tumult in 2008, which elicited a review of the Hummer brand. Found lacking and without a buyer, the Hummer brand was completely dismantled by 2010.
Very rarely were steel wheels put on these cars due to the large size and premium quality that are the two most prominent features of the short lived Hummer brand; however, one steel wheel was offered on the H3. Chrome wheels on Hummer vehicles are very common and available on all three models.
