The Hyundai Motor Company was founded in South Korea in 1967 by Chung Ju-yung as an automobile manufacturer, facilitated by Ford Motor Company's Cortina car that was the first car hyundai produced. It was not until seven years later in 1975 that Hyundai had a fully developed car of their own to sell, making the Hyundai Pony not only Hyundai's first car but also the first Korean car on the market albeit, the Pony was developed by a team hired by British George Turnbull, styled by the famous Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign, while still utilizing Mitsubishi engine and transmission technology.
Although the Pony was the first mass produced car from Korea, since it did not pass emissions standards in the US, the first car Hyundai sold in the U.S. was actually the Excel. Even though the Excel was initially met with praise and even awarded Fortune magazine's "Best Product #10", its warm welcome soon dissipated as the obviously poor quality of the car shined through the cheap price that was the main part in achieving popularity. The Excel set the stage for Hyundai's first 15 years in America as most of the cars produced were cheap and of a corresponding quality, unavaoidably creating a somewhat negative brand image.
Since the early 2000s Hyundai has aggressively been trying to retroact its reputation by pouring money into not only long term research of its vehicles, but aspects of the quality, design and manufacturing of their cars; offering a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty on every car; and becoming one of FIFA World Cup's sponsors. Hyundai's techniques have been working to change public perception in America as they continue to earn Top Safety Awards, along with various other accolades.
Wheels on Hyundai cars don't necessarily show definitive similarities since much of what Hyundai does is through amalgamations of other brand's products, however; most of the rims are finished in silver or hyper silver and since the early 2000s no rim has been smaller than 16". A handful have been finished in chrome or polished, but besides the the painted steel rims (of which there were not many) no other finishes were available.
